Lobby at State House for Automatic Voter Registration
June 28, 2017 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pm
Last week, 22 different organizations came to the State House to testify in support of the next step forward for voting rights in Massachusetts. Automatic Voter Registration will add up to 700,000 new voters to the rolls at the same time it modernizes our voter registration system and makes it more accurate and secure. That’s good for democracy and good for our state.
We need to show that the people are behind this and your presence will help.
Automatic Voter Registration shifts voter registration from an opt-in to an opt-out system. If passed, every eligible citizen who goes to the RMV and other state voter registration agencies would be automatically registered to vote, unless they decline.
This will minimize paper forms and data-entry errors, and maximizing accuracy, security and most importantly – register more voters.
Automatic Voter Registration has already been passed by seven states (Oregon, California, Vermont, Alaska, Connecticut, Georgia, West Virginia) and the District of Columbia! In Oregon, the reform registered 230,000 new voters in the first six months—most of whom voted in November!
Without a huge showing of support, it may be hard to get the legislature to pay attention. Your presence would help raise the profile of automatic voter registration and show that there are many people that care about voting rights. I hope to see you there!
Thanks for all you do for democracy,
Pam Wilmot, Executive Director
and the rest of the team at Common Cause Massachusetts
