LCI Lecture Series – Climate Change Impacts on Cape Cod: What Can We Do?

September 21, 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Lower Cape Indivisible (LCI) will be presenting the first in a six-part lecture series—Impacts of Climate Change on Our Small Part of the World—at the Brewster Ladies’ Library, 1822 Main Street, Brewster on Thursday, September 21, from 6:30-8:00 p.m.  Free and open to the public, the focus of Part One is to provide an introduction to climate change and its impacts on Cape Cod, and examine Cape Cod’s contribution to this phenomenon.

Featured speakers will be Mon Cochran, Interim Director of the Cape Cod Climate Change Collaborative, and Chris Powicki, President, Water Energy Ecology Information & Design Services.

Cochran will outline key findings from climate science, recent dramatic changes in the earth’s atmosphere, potential negative impacts on Cape Cod, and steps that individuals and organizations on Cape Cod can take to reduce their carbon footprints.  “Cape Cod is highly vulnerable to sea level rise and increasingly violent storms, caused by global warming,” says Cochran. “Dramatic action is needed now to cut carbon emissions, and individuals can make a difference.”

Powicki will focus on the global significance of Cape Cod’s carbon footprint, describe progress toward state and regional emission reduction goals, and identify technology priorities and opportunities for political action at the local, regional, and state levels. “As fossil fuel interests run amok in Washington, individuals and communities have significant opportunity to band together—and stand with the rest of the world—to stave off the worst effects of climate change,” says Powicki.

The lecture series — Climate Change Threats to Cape Cod: What Can We Do? —will continue on Thursday evenings through the fall and winter, and feature experts from leading environmental organizations, including the Association to Preserve Cape Cod, Center for Coastal Studies, Pleasant Bay Alliance, Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, Woods Hole Sea Grant and Cape Cod Cooperative Extension.

Among the topics they will address are the threats climate change poses to the local Cape environment, and economy, and what individuals can do to help
